Team Asobi, the creators behind Astro Bot, are integrating over 150 characters from various PlayStation franchises into the forthcoming game. This includes themed levels, cosmetics, and more. The previous edition, Astro’s Playroom, is recognized for similar features. But will this trend continue in upcoming versions?
Nicolas Doucet, the studio head and creative director, discussed with VGC that subsequent Astro games may or may not have guest characters from PlayStation. The decision to include PlayStation icons in the forthcoming Astro Bot was taken early in the development process, but this may not be a requirement for future editions. Doucet expressed that Team Asobi values the adaptability of the Astro series and isn't overly particular about specific details.
He mentioned that, at the outset of this game's development, there were differing opinions about incorporating elements of PlayStation. Some team members suggested forging their own path for the game, but the decision was ultimately made to add a fun layer of PlayStation content. After all, why not?
Doucet underscored that even if a future adventure was exclusively Astro, without any elements of PlayStation, it wouldn't be an issue. The primary concern is maintaining the game’s core elements and qualities. The Astro franchise’s flexibility is one of its major attractions. They approach game design light-heartedly, without overemphasis on backstory or minor details.
Astro Bot is scheduled for its grand launch on PS5 this coming September 6, retailing at $60. It is also noteworthy that it won't include any microtransactions, and free post-launch DLC is planned.
